Information Literacy Competencies Addressed

The information competent student:

  1. Determines the nature and extent of the information needed by using sources that are appropriate to the assignment such as scholarly journals and books.

     2.  Finds and uses search tools effectively and efficiently using a search strategy using keywords, synonyms or subject headings.

     3.  Locates and obtains the information.

     4.  Critically evaluates the information before using it by evaluating information for reliability, validity, accuracy, authority, timeliness and perspective or bias.

     5.  Organizes, synthesizes, integrates and ethically/legally applies the information.

 

We will touch on elements of all these broad competencies in our instruction session.

Goals for this session:  Students will locate, access, assess, acquire a  minimum of one peer-reviewed journal article and prepare a correct citation (APA) as part of the research assignment for this class. 

Additionally, students will be introduced to EasyBib database and will review how to cite a print book, an eBook, an approved web site article and peer reviewed journal article

EXS 450 RESEARCH PROJECT ASSIGNMENT

Fall 2015

Objectives:

This assignment is designed to enhance and deepen your knowledge of the following chronic conditions:

  • CABG-Vanessa
  • Angina and silent ischemia-Thurman
  • Atrial fibrillation-Andrew
  • Valvular heart disease (MVP, MS and MR)-William
  • Chronic heart failure-Macon
  • Cardiac transplant-Noah
  • Angina and Silent Ischemia-Marcus
  • PAD-Nicole
  • Aneurysms-Dillon
  • Hypertension-Nick
  • Valvular heart disease (AS and AR)-Jordan
  • Myocardial infarction-Tucker
  • Pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators -Lyndsay

Your goal is to conduct an extensive review of literature of the specific issue you have chosen. You are required to produce a clear and persuasive written report based on well-documented evidence (100 points), and to prepare and conduct professional-quality presentation (50 points).

 

Method:

 

Use the following electronic search tools to retrieve materials for your assignment:

  • Library catalog records like Call Number and Library Locations to acquire materials from the library
  • Ebooks (formerly NetLibrary)
  • Medline database (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/).
  • Library Journal Finder
  • Other Web sources (see approved list of sites)

You should organize the collected information and address the following in respect to the chronic condition you have chosen:

  • Epidemiology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Exercise response
  • Treatment (all forms)
  • Exercise prescription

Present your review of literature in a formal report of at least 2,500 words and in a ten-minute formal presentation including visual aids. Your report must include information from at least five sources.

At a minimum, each report should include the following items:

  • Title Page
  • Table of Contents
  • Executive Summary
  • Introduction
  • Analysis
  • Conclusions
  • Works Cited

Throughout the report, use APA documentation style to cite all sources. (Note from librarian: location of library resources for APA format has changed; we will discuss options for insuring your citations are correct.)
