Government Information by Esther Burgess

NC Wesleyan as a Depository

The Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) provides Federal government materials to selective libraries at no cost. Pearsall Library, at North Carolina Wesleyan College, is a selective depository for federal government documents. The library makes government documents accessible to anyone who wishes to use them and provides assistance to help users find appropriate documents.  The library acquires government documents that support the college curriculum and meet the information needs of the college community and the region, choosing resources in a variety of formats, including print, audiovisual, and electronic. As federal depository documents become available in electronic formats, the library emphasizes documents in electronic formats as these resources are available to users, regardless of geographic location and time zones.

In accordance with Guidelines for the Depository library System, the library selects:

  • Titles from the Suggested Core Collection
  • Essential Government and privately published catalogs and indexes
  • Materials that enable the library to serve the educational mission of the College
  • Resources which provide statistical and economic data that serve the needs of the local community
  • Titles that address popular issues such as terrorism.

Subject priorities for government documents include:

  • Business and Banking
  • Criminal Justice
  • Education
  • Environmental Science
  • History and Geography
  • Regional Interest (North Carolina)
  • U.S. Legislative and Judicial Systems

Federal depository items selected for acquisition by the library are reviewed annually and updated. Items that are not used or of potential long-term interest are de-selected.
